Tomato spotted wilt virus is a spherical negative-sense RNA virus that has a diameter around 100 nm. It is one of the most economically devastating plant viruses in the world. Transmission can only occur when larvae stage thrips acquire the virus. The larvae stage for thrips lasts around 1-3 days. The virus is acquired by thrips when they feed on infected plants.
